Join us for a story outdoors in High Elms Country Park. All sessions begin with a story reading and carry on with themed activities. See below for session details. Suitable for children who enjoy picture book stories, around 20 months to 4years. We stick to paths accessible for buggies.
Session dates and times
Thursday 28th July and Friday 19th August ‘The Gruffalo’: Julia Donaldson’s modern classic where mouse outwits the dreaded gruffalo. We play games with fox, hunt for minibeasts with snake and make a nest for owl.
Monday 1st August ‘Bog Baby’: Jeanne Willis’ tale about two sisters going hunting for newts and finding a little blue creature. With real pond dipping afterwards where we might find some newts of our own. A longer book, more suitable for the older children.
Thursday 11th August ‘Superworm’ – Julia Donaldson’s story with real minibeast hunting afterwards and rolling worms from clay.
All sessions will start at 10:00 and finish at 11:00
£5 per child
Babes in arms are free. An adult must accompany children on this session, but they do not need to buy a ticket.
Where to meet
We will meet in the paddock ten minutes before the start time to get ready for session. We ask you to be considerate to other participants and aim to arrive as promptly as possible. ‘The Paddock’ is the fenced off area surrounded by bunting near the mansion grounds of High Elms Country Park. To get there from the main car park follow the path up the slope and bear right, you will see the paddock just past the public toilets & Eton fives court.
In case of rain, a room in the BEECHE building will be made available for participants to wait for the session to begin and read the story (we will still head out for the activities).
Directions and Parking
This event takes place in High Elms Country Park. The main car park is located on High Elms Road (near Shire Lane). You can follow the Brown Highway signs for High Elms Country Park.
If the main car park is full then exit the car park and turn left go down High Elms Road a further 200 metres and turn into the Golf Course Car Park, it is fine to park in this car park. Exit Golf Course Car Park through the barrier gate at the bottom of car park then follow path straight ahead, go past pond and you will find yourself on front lawns go straight across and you will find yourself by main car park.
Blue badge parking is available in front of the BEECHE building. To access this please access the park using the entrance off Shire Lane which is marked for deliveries and staff. At the cross roads turn left up the slope and you will see the BEECHE building at the top of the slope. Please be aware this entrance and car park is only for Blue Badge holders.
What to wear and other information
The session will take place outside so please wear appropriate clothing. Please wear trainers, walking boots or wellies. Sandals,flip flops and ballet pumps are not suitable for an outdoor session at High Elms.
The session will involve some walking , we will be sticking to paths that are suitable for buggies.
